The
2007-2008 school year has begun.
It seems as though graduation was just yesterday.
The South Dakota Association of Secondary School Principals
is an organization where the members are the voice of education for
middle and high school across the state.
As members, you are able to network with fellow
administrators and use the group as a sounding board for issues and
concerns. I would like
to encourage anyone who is not a member to consider joining this
professional organization. The
upcoming school year is one that will present us with several
challenges. I would hope
that as administrators of various sized schools, we would take time
to recognize and celebrate the positive things that are taking place
in the public school system. We
need to get our message of high quality education and above national
average test score out to our communities and state legislators.
The education that we provide the students of this state is
one that we can all be proud of.
This was supposed to be the year for the reauthorization of
No Child Left Behind (NCLB), but it does not appear that it will
happen anytime soon. Some
of the key elements that are being discussed in the reauthorization
would allow states to use growth models and multiple assessments.
Other items would modify the assessments and accountability
system for students with disabilities and English Language Learners. I
truly hope that one day our society would realize the importance of
education and make it a priority.
It seems as though it is an afterthought when it comes to
appropriate funding at the state and national levels.
The idea of fully funded mandates is nothing new, but
unfortunately the government has not delivered.
Appropriate funding of education needs to be a priority in
Pierre and Washington, DC. I want to thank all of you for your dedication and commitment to providing a high quality education to the students you serve. Enjoy your school year and I am honored to serve as President of SDASSP. |
